Signs Your Garage Door Spring is Broken
Your garage door springs do the heavy lifting. When they fail, your opener alone isn’t strong enough to move the door. Look for these common symptoms:
A Loud Bang:
You might hear a sound like a gunshot or a firecracker coming from your garage
The 6-Inch Stop:
The door starts to open but stops after only a few inches because the opener's safety sensors detect the excessive weight.
Visible Gaps:
If you look at the horizontal bar above your door, you’ll see a clear 2"–3" gap in the coiled spring.
Cables Hanging Loose:
When a spring snaps, the tension is lost, often causing the lift cables to unspool or hang off the sides.
The Door is Extremely Heavy:
If you pull the emergency release and cannot lift the door by hand, the spring is definitely broken.
